What is an AIM High Day?

In a nutshell, local schools send students to a central host school where they will spend the day working as part of a small, class-sized group with a subject specialist to deepen their knowledge and understanding of themes or ideas within a subject.

AIM High Days are predominantly tailored towards gifted and talented learners or those who display a particular interest or flair for a subject, but we also organise catch up days and tailor specialist events for reluctant or disengaged students who will benefit from additional support.  We can also offer SATs and GCSE prep days, and can offer exclusive AIM High Days if your school prefers.

We currently run AIM High Days in 3 core areas; Writing, Maths, and Science, and many AIM High events incorporate multiple subject areas and core skills including targeted areas within the National Curriculum.  For example, in an AIM High Writing day with a focus on historical fiction, students practice and develop creative writing techniques while learning about historical events and analyzing source material, all guided by an experienced historical fiction author.

Our most popular AIM High Days are aimed at KS2 learners, but we run AIM High Days across the country for children in KS1 - KS3.

Why take part in an AIM High Day?

Apart from the fact they are great fun for students and staff alike, there are many benefits to your school to participating in the AIM High Programme;

  • Tailored events designed to stretch and challenge more able learners covering a range of National Curriculum themes

  • It’s not only students who benefit, and attending an AIM High Day is considered a positive CPD activity for staff

  • Demonstrate to Local Authorities/OFSTED that more able children have opportunities to expand their horizons and work with a range of subject specialists

  • Children from different schools can inspire and challenge each other and even make a new friend or two!

  • Staff and children are encouraged to share their learning and achievements with peers when they return to school, so that ideas and learning cascades beyond the AIM High Day.

About The AIM High Programme

The A.I.M High Writers’ programme was originally set up in 2002 by one of Britain’s favourite children’s poets Brian Moses as Able Writers Days.  Brian and his colleagues from the world of children’s poetry worked with hundreds of young, gifted and enthusiastic writers to help them develop their writing voices.

In 2011, Authors Abroad started to manage the programme and it rapidly expanded to include Able Maths and Able Science Days. Then in 2022, after further expanding the programme to deliver a more inclusive range of events the programme was rebranded and Able Days became AIM High Days.

We now work with over 150 host schools, over 5,000 guest schools, and have almost 100 subject specialists ready to help inspire young people to achieve, succeed and master new skills.

NACE Partnership

We are proud to work in partnership with NACE, the National Association for Able Children in Education who work tirelessly to improve provision for more able learners in our schools.  AIM High Days provide challenging and enriching opportunities for more able learners while helping raise achievement on a whole-school level.   As part of this partnership, all NACE member schools get a discount of 15% on all AIM High bookings - please mention this when you place your booking.

Information on attending an AIM High Day

AIM High Days typically run from 9.30am - 2.45pm to allow time for guest schools to travel to the host school.  Attending schools are required to organise their own travel.

All children and adults attending are asked to bring a nut-free packed lunch unless advised otherwise.

A member of staff with enhanced DBS clearance from each guest school is required to accompany and supervise their children (can be teaching staff, TA, school governors or school support staff).  If you have any questions about who can attend an AIM High Day with your students, please contact us.

Many AIM High authors and subject specialists will have a selection of their books for sale at the event. Details of cost and how to purchase are provided as part of the booking process.
