About Mary
A graduate of the MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, Mary has lived a varied creative life as a writer, editor, teacher, reviewer and Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at the University of York. Mary has delivered talks on writing non-fiction, led workshops on most genres of writing (including script writing) and is the author of over 50 non-fiction books for students from Key Stages 1-5 on topics ranging from the social sciences, geography, physics, biology, history and literature.
Mary’s AIM High Writing Days
Taking the view that everything is narrative and that writing confidence can be taught, Mary delivers writing workshops in both fiction and non-fiction.
Her fiction workshops can include writing poetry, scripts and/or short story creation. From creative warm up activities to the main event, the students will be taken through how writers work to construct characters, plot creation and genre. Using a variety of stimuli including the Great Clothes Line of Cluttered Thoughts, participants will be encouraged to find and develop their own, unique writing voice.
In bespoke non-fiction informational writing workshops, the students will create book maps, learn how to make facts earn their keep and choose words and images appropriate for the audience. Participants will cover the key skills of hooking a reader, produce engaging writing, learn how to edit and proofread effectively, make editorial decisions and work collaboratively - just like the real publishing process.
