Joely Fashokun is a highly experienced maths teacher and workshop leader.

About Joely

Joely has taught Mathematics across alternative provision and secondary schools in the South East, leading workshops for teachers about the creativity of mathematics and pedagogy for teaching maths at school.

As a teacher, researcher and academic, Joely is interested in the application of cognitive learning theories to maths and how to boost engagement in the subject.

Joely’s AIM High Maths Days

Joely's workshops explore mathematical concepts that promote oracy and collaborative learning, multiplicative reasoning and engaging students in the creative thinking involved in Mathematics!

Joely’s sessions aims to draw on pupils love for mathematics as they delve into the nature of what mathematics is: problem-solving, questioning, pattern-spotting and conjecture.

Here are some examples of the activities covered in Joely’s AIM High Maths days:

  • Fluent/related calculations and what it takes to be a mathematician

  • Fizz, Buzz! and target trio

  • Four fours game

  • Using factorials and simplifying chain fractions

  • Discovering special number sequences and powers

Curriculum Focus

In KS2 sessions, each activity is designed to support key mathematical skills while fostering rich discussions, collaborative problem-solving, and perseverance - essential skills outlined in the National Curriculum and equipping pupils with strong mathematical foundations.

Year 5/6 Maths Session

Fluent and Related Calculations Curriculum Objectives:

-          Develop efficient mental calculation strategies using known facts rather than formal written methods, reinforcing calculation fluency.

-          Strengthen understanding of number operations, including multiplication, division, percentages, and inverse relationships, supporting multiplicative reasoning.

-          Encourage pattern sensing by recognising mathematical relationships between numbers and operations.

Thinking Like a Mathematician Curriculum Objectives:

-          Foster oracy through discussion-based learning, helping students articulate their reasoning and thought processes clearly.

-          Promote literacy by exploring how mathematicians communicate ideas, interpret information, and express problem-solving strategies.

-          Develop resilience and perseverance by highlighting how mathematicians overcome challenges and learn from mistakes.

Four Fours Curriculum Objectives:

-          Strengthen calculation fluency by systematically exploring number operations.

-          Support pattern sensing as students identify relationships between different calculations.

-          Encourage multiple representations by considering different ways to express numerical relationships, enhancing problem-solving flexibility.

-          Oracy and collaboration as the entire group works to find solutions for all numbers from 1-100

How Many Codes? Curriculum Objectives:

-          Introduce fundamental ideas about combinations and systematic working strategies, reinforcing pattern sensing.

-          Develop collaborative learning as students work together to test different approaches and compare their findings.

-          Encourage learning from mistakes by refining strategies through trial and improvement.

Factorials (!) Curriculum Objectives:

-          Introduce multiplicative reasoning by exploring factorials as repeated multiplication patterns.

-          Develop pattern sensing by recognising how factorials grow exponentially.

-          Apply factorials to real-world contexts such as arranging objects in different orders (permutations).

-          Strengthen calculation fluency by reinforcing multiplication and division strategies.

Simplifying Long Chain Fractions Curriculum Objectives:

-          Help pupils develop numerical fluency by rewriting complex fractions in their simplest form.

-          Reinforce multiple representations by expressing fractions as division, multiplication, and whole numbers.

-          Encourage oracy by discussing mental strategies for simplifying fractions efficiently.

-          Promote learning from mistakes and resilience as pupils refine their methods through trial and improvement.

Year 3/4 Mathematics Workshop

Fluent Calculations & Related Calculations (Addition, Subtraction, and Simple Times Tables) Curriculum Objectives:

-          Strengthen calculation fluency through quick mental addition and subtraction using known facts.

-          Support multiplicative reasoning by exploring simple times tables and their relationship to addition.

-          Encourage pattern sensing as pupils identify connections between number operations.

-          Develop oracy as pupils discuss and compare strategies for solving calculations efficiently.

Fizz Buzz Curriculum Objectives:

-          Reinforce multiplicative reasoning by recognising patterns in multiples and divisibility rules.

-          Strengthen oracy and listening skills, as pupils must carefully follow the rules and respond accurately.

-          Encourage resilience and perseverance, particularly when spotting errors and adapting strategies.

-          Support collaborative learning by engaging pupils in a fun, interactive group challenge that requires listening skills and focus.

Target Trio Curriculum Objectives:

-          Strengthen calculation fluency by using addition, subtraction, and multiplication to reach target numbers.

-          Develop pattern sensing and multiple representations, as pupils explore different ways to manipulate numbers.

-          Enhance problem-solving skills similar to Four Fours by encouraging logical thinking and systematic approaches.

-          Promote resilience through trial and improvement, refining methods as they go.

Square, Triangular & Cube Numbers (Using Visual Representations & Multilink Cubes) Curriculum Objectives:

-          Foster pattern sensing by visually identifying square numbers and linking them to triangular and cube numbers.

-          Strengthen multiple representations through hands-on exploration with multilink cubes.

-          Build collaborative learning as pupils investigate number relationships together.

-          Encourage resilience by refining reasoning and spotting emerging number patterns.

Powers of Ten & Scale of Large Numbers Curriculum Objectives:

-          Introduce multiple representations by expressing numbers using powers of ten notation.

-          Support pattern sensing by exploring exponential growth and how numbers scale up.

-          Encourage collaborative learning as pupils work together to analyse large numbers in real-world contexts.

-          Develop reasoning skills through problem-solving exercises, especially when determining why 10⁰ equals 1.
