Cost: £85 for the day workshop, an additional £25 can be paid either at the same time or after the course if you wish to have your work appraised and receive individual feedback from Sara.

Itinerary for the day:

A Crash Course in Creative Writing – Buckle up for a fast-paced writing workshop that will rev you up for NaNoWriMo.

Workshop Objective: Each writer will leave with the building blocks and the start of an original story – ready to write and complete a novel for National Novel Writing Month.

 

10 a.m. Generating and Testing Ideas
Sara will work with writers to fine tune the idea they want to purse, and then through a series of questions and discussion, they will test and strengthen their story ideas. (Writers can come with an idea, but Sara will provide exercises to help writers generate ideas too.)

11 a.m. Developing Characters
The group will discuss what makes great characters. Writers will respond to a series of prompts to help them develop a compelling main character. Sara will set a writing challenge to help writers create three-dimensional characters.

12 p.m. Setting the Scene and Writing Description
How do you maximize your setting? Sara will share a number of techniques and exercises to help writers explore their settings and write engaging descriptions.

1 p.m. Lunch

2 p.m. Plotting an Engaging Story
Sara will lead an interactive-plotting exercise. Writers will develop a series of plot points for their novels. Sara can trouble shoot tricky plot problems.

3 p.m. Hooking the Reading from the Opening Lines
This section focuses on creating an opening that will hook readers from the very first page.

3:45 p.m. Breathing Life into Each Scene
Sara will outline the fundamentals of creating a scene and discuss the building blocks that writers will need as they set out for NaNoWriMo.

4:30 p.m. What’s Next?
Sara will share strategies for completing a novel and discuss what it takes to be a published writer.

All about the author.

Sara writes and edits fiction for children and teens. Her new series Chasing Danger is an action-adventure series for tweens. Dark Parties, her first young adult novel, won the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Crystal Kite Award for Europe. As a freelance editor of series fiction, she has worked on twelve different series and edited nearly 100 books. She has given writing workshops in the US, UK and Europe as part of Book Bound http://www.bookboundretreat.com and teaches a master’s class on writing for children/teens at Goldsmiths University. Details on the Venue

The course will run in Custom House and Canning Town Community Neighbourhood Centre and Library in the Elizabeth Fry Room.

The facility has disabled access and there is a cafe onsite. There are also other lunch options available within walking distance – a bakery, cafes and a Co-Op.

The closest tube station is Canning Town Tube station which is a 5 minute walk away.

How to book a place

There will need to be a minimum of 15 participants to run the course. The workshop can hold a maximum of 30 to ensure the quality of the workshop is retained and everyone has a chance to share their work.

You will be informed if the course has sufficient numbers and is running by Wednesday 5th September and then asked for payment to guarantee your place.

Cost for the workshop is £85, you can pay an additional £25 at the time of booking or after the course to receive feedback on a sample of your work from Sara that you can submit via the online forum.

Payment can be made via Paypal, cheque (made payable to Authors Abroad) or BACS transfer.

Please note that you will not be able to attend the course if you have not pre-paid.

Cancelling your place.

If you wish to cancel your place on the course please inform Yvonne as soon as possible. If you cancel before 5th September there will be no charge.

If you cancel after this date there will not be a charge if the class has sufficient numbers to run. However, if your cancellation is after 5th September and your cancellation brings the class to less than 15 attendees you will be billed £45 to enable the class to still run.
