Heather Butler

Heather has written over 30 books. Us Minus Mum was long listed for Carnegie and also picked up an award from the UK Literacy Association. The Milkshake Detectives was published in April 2015. Before these Heather wrote education resource material such as Helping Children Think About Bereavement (Routledge 2013) and Classroom Literacy Games (Routledge 2012).

Heather’s School Visits

Heather loves visiting schools. She has taught for over 3 decades and is passionate about helping young writers learn the art of story writing. Heather taught in early years right up to year six in different parts of the UK, has worked in schools in Poland, Croatia and America and been writer-in-residence in several schools.

A typical day in school sees her making up a story with a whole key stage. Children suggest ideas, a school vote is taken as to which is the best one and Heather drops in ‘top tips’ on how to write as everyone goes along. This process usually involves lots of laughter and interaction, with Heather bringing a bag of story prompts the students use for inspiration. Children then work in their classes, retelling the story or creating their own, whilst Heather leads class workshops talking about writing, sharing where she gets her ideas from and answering questions. Heather likes to talk the day over with whoever is organising it so that everyone gets the most out of it.

For KS1 children Heather brings a story she wrote and illustrated for her sons when they were aged 4 and 6. Heather has the original teddies and wooden camel that the story was about.

Us Minus Mum

Us Minus Mum has been longlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2015 and shortlisted for the UKLA Book Awards 2015.
George and Theo’s mum is brilliant.
She tells great stories, can wave the fastest of anyone on the planet and, most importantly, she was the one who suggested they adopt a scruffy dog called Goffo.
The boys think she’s invincible. But they’re wrong.
Because Mum is ill.
Really ill.

It’s up to George and Theo to keep Mum smiling. Which will almost probably definitely involve wellies, shepherd’s pie and Goffo’s victory at the pet talent show . . .

The Milkshake Detectives

Charlie and Julia are certain that the sleepy village of Peddle-Worth must contain some mysteries for their brand new agency – The Milkshake Detectives – to solve. All they need to do is find them! So when somebody called ‘The Bear’ starts leaving strange clues, they can’t wait to put their spy skills to use. The only problem? Everyone else wants to join in the bear hunt too! Not least, Charlie’s new step-brothers who are quite possibly the most irritating boys on the planet. But with the competition heating up, Charlie might be missing a more important mystery. And this one lies a lot closer to home …

Reviews and Testimonials

“We absolutely loved having Heather here. She really connected with the children and really inspired them. We would love to have her back again next year.” Bishops Stortford College

“We absolutely loved Heather’s visit thank you. All of the adults said that the children had never been so engaged with an author and this was due to the way that she made everything really exciting for the children and really got down to their level.” Epsom Primary School
