All About Wes Magee
Wes was born in Greenock, Scotland and worked as a bank clerk and National Serviceman before training as a teacher. He taught in Swindon schools until becoming head teacher of large primary schools in Welwyn Garden City and Brough, near Hull.
In 1989 he resigned to become a full-time author and has now published more than 90 books for children (poetry, fiction, plays, picture books and anthologies) and 6 collections of poetry for adults.
‘The Very Best of Wes Magee’ won the Children’s Poetry Bookshelf Award, and ‘No Man’s Land’ (poetry for adults) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.
Over the years he has made author visits to 100’s of schools and libraries nationwide and abroad where he performs his inter-active ‘Poetry Show’ and tutors writing workshops.
He speaks at Teachers’ Conferences, tutors at adult education colleges, runs INSET events for teachers and his work has been featured many times on radio and TV.
Wes’ School Visits
Depending on the size of the school Wes usually begins with a 30 min session for reception and infants – ‘Action Rhymes’. Then a ‘Poetry Show’ for years 1 & 2 (40 mins) and further ‘Poetry Shows’ for years 3 & 4 (50 mins) and years 5 & 6 (again, 50 mins).
The various interactive ‘Poetry Shows’ are age-appropriate, educational, entertaining and enthusing.
If there’s time Wes ends the day with a ‘Writing Workshop’ (1 hour) for either a single class, or a G&T class-size group from years 3 – 6.
Some schools prefer ‘Poetry Shows’ while others want more ‘Workshops’. Wes works with schools to give them what they’re looking for.
He also offers INSET sessions for teachers on literacy associated matters as well as evening events for teachers and parents. And…. ‘Able Writers’ days during which students write their own books.
Finally, Wes also carries box loads of new books which can be displayed for browsing and/or sale and signing.

Samples of Wes’ Poems
“Jack’s killed the Giant!” That’s what people said.
Truth was, the fallen Ogre wasn’t dead,
but lay unconscious, huge lump on his head.
He rose, when Jack and all had gone to bed.
With aching brain the Giant stomped away
and walked the world for nine years and a day.
Where mountains towered he stopped. “This looks okay,”
he growled, and made his bed in boulder clay.
Hill climbers saw broad footprints now and then,
but no one ever found the Giant’s den.
The people said, “Beware! He’ll come again,”
and left poor Jack to watch……and wonder when.
we’ll land on planet Mars.
we’ll travel to the stars.
we’ll live upon the Moon.
a striker racing,
a fullback chasing,
a winger crossing,
a captain bossing,
a wingback tackling,
a stopper shackling,
a halfback strolling,
a coach controlling,
a forward flicking,
a goalie kicking,
a linkman scheming,
a mad-fan dreaming
That cooling hand placed on your hot brow….
Your toes when they’re tickled by fingers….
When someone you love just touches your arm….
The time when you walked hand in hand on a beach….
That hug when you felt, oh, so tragic….
The brush of soft lips on your tear-stained cheek….
skin magic …..
