He was a member of the core writing team behind Bob The Builder and was Lead Writer and Story Editor for Waybuloo, the BBC’s landmark pre-school programme. His first script, Wargame(adapted from the Michael Foreman book) won the British Animation Award and his work for children’s television has been nominated for BAFTA and RTS Awards.

Simon’s School Visits

Simon has run workshops on creative writing with primary school (KS1 and KS2) children for many years. Recently, he has also worked with secondary school students.

On a day visit, Simon often talks to the whole school in a morning assembly setting, introducing himself and his books with a short talk – he then goes on to spend the day working with individual or combined classes for sessions of an hour or so. He reads from his books, talks about being a writer and – most importantly – leads practical activities helping children write their own stories. For KS1 and reception, he bases the sessions on the professional storylining meetings he runs and attends for the TV shows he writes – he gets the children to devise and develop their own stories through a variety of structured activities. For KS2 he uses his Young Houdini books as a starting point – explaining how he developed his books and encouraging children to create their own stories for a young Houdini, featuring mystery and daredevil escapes!

His aim by the end of the day is simple – that every child has come up with the beginnings of a story that they can then develop further in class. So many children find the process of simply putting the first words or marks on a piece of paper difficult – understandably so – Simon seeks to share with them the various techniques he has learnt for for how to do this.
