All About Roy Apps
Roy Apps is an award winning children’s author, scriptwriter, dramatist and lyricist.
He started his career writing jokes, songs and sketches for comedians such as David Jason and Lenny Henry. For over ten years he wrote for the award-winning TV drama series, Byker Grove. He has also written for many other TV shows including Chucklevision, The Ghost Hunter and Casper’s Scare School.
In 2001 Roy was presented with a special BAFTA for his work on children’s TV, one of only four writers ever to have received such an award.
The Secret Summer of Daniel Lyons won The Writers’ Guild Children’s Book Award and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Awards. His other current series include The Twitches and The Fang Gang.
His sports series Dream to Win is aimed specifically at struggling readers.
Roy supports Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and in his free time he enjoys singing and sailing.
Roy’s School Visits
Roy visits schools, libraries and bookshops all over the country. He has appeared regularly at arts and book Festivals including the Edinburgh Children’s Book Festival, the Birmingham Young Readers’ Festival and the Southampton Children’s Book Festival. He has featured on BBC TV and BBC Radio talking about story writing and being interviewed by young writers. He leads writing projects for all ages and has helped young writers create books, plays, films, poetry, podcasts and operas.
He has been Writer in Residence with -amongst others- the Royal Court Theatre, London, the Connaught Theatre, Worthing, the Museum of Canterbury, Opera House Music Projects, the Aspire Trust Liverpool and The National Gallery, London.
Roy is currently a member of the Basildon Adopt-an-Author Project whose patron is England goalkeeper Robert Green. He is also part of the National Education Trust’s team of experienced writers providing creative opportunities for ‘gifted & talented’ young writers in primary and secondary schools in England and Wales.

The Shed in Your Head
For Y2 – Y6: Group size: up to 200+ Length: 45 min – 75 min.
A fun, interactive session about the magic and power of stories, where they come from and how you can make them come alive – ideal for that special ‘Book Week’ event.
For Reception, Y1 and Y2: Group size: up to 50 Length: 20 min – 40 min.
Fun reading with hats, a noisy chant with actions, lots of audience participation and a friendly spider called Sidney.
Writers’ Workshops for Schools
Group Size: Usually class size, but can be larger by arrangement.
