All About Peter Bunzl
I am an author, filmmaker & animator. I write quirky tales about finding your place in the world and what makes you unique. Stories of family and humanity and where they begin and end. I love cinematic images, magical and mysterious adventures and big odd ideas!
I grew up in South London in a rambling Victorian house with 3 cats, 2 dogs, 1 little sister, an antique dealer dad and an artist mum. I have always wanted to tell stories, and as a child I found inspiration visiting TV and film sets including James Bond and Postman Pat, where my mum worked as a costume designer.
After studying at art college and film school, I worked as an animator on commercials, pop videos and 2 BAFTA winning children’s TV shows. I’ve written and directed several successful short films and I now live in North London with my partner Michael, a fox who visits our garden, and a clutter of house spiders.
My debut novel Cogheart was shortlisted for the Waterstones Book Prize 2017, and for the Branford Boase Award 2017. It was Waterstones Children’s Book of the Month for August 2016. It won the Dudley Teen Book Award and Sefton Super Reads Award 2017. It was also nominated for Haringey Children’s Book Award 2017, Hillingdon Primary Book of the Year 2017, Leeds Book Award 2017, Warwickshire Junior Book Award 2017, the North East Book Award 2017, the Stockport Children’s Book Award 2017.
Peter’s Author Visits
I love meeting enthusiastic readers, writers and artists to talk about how I became a children’s author. I am happy to do classroom size groups of 30-60 students, or larger assembly sized talks for up to 250-300+ students. I’m currently offering events for years 4-8 –- Key Stages 2 and 3.
My event includes an interactive presentation of usually 45 minutes to an hour; with activities, a reading and a Q and A. Then a book signing for however long we’ve organized afterwards.
During the session I explain how real-life VICTORIANS, AIRSHIPS and AUTOMATA (clockwork robots), inspired my books. I talks about my love of FANTASTICAL FILM ROBOTS and explain how I combined all these ideas to create an EXCITING, SUSPENSE-FILLED STORY.
In smaller groups (30 or less) I finish up by teaching the students to make an ANIMATION FLIPBOOK. In larger group (60+) the talk ends with a BIG INTERACTIVE ROBOT QUIZ and some DRESSING UP! In the Q and A, or longer sessions, I like to talk about my inspiring family, my early writing, comics and animation, and how I first got into writing stories.

“Peter was so engaging and professional in his presentation. He had a great rapport with the children and answered their questions beautifully. “Everything you want from a children’s author visit! It was inspiring, creative and fun.
