All About Joseph Witchall
Joseph is an illustrator of every genre of book imaginable, from children’s Picture books, Graphic Novels, Young Fiction and Poetry, to Educational textbooks and adult fiction. And credited in over 17 published books and comics.
Coming from a background of studying animation at university, as well as having a passion for cinema and growing up as a lover of comic books, he feels that this strongly comes out in his illustration, in the movement and dynamism that he translates into his work.
Now, when he is not illustrating books, he teaches the skills and crafts that he has learnt over the years in primary school, secondary school and further education. Joseph has a passion for his subject and injects masses of enthusiasm into his teaching with a very hands-on approach to creating art and design, aimed at encouraging students to explore new skills, build confidence and get creative.
Joseph has many years experience teaching art and illustration at Primary, Secondary and Further Education level, as a qualified art teacher.
Joseph structures his workshops to fit any requirements the school or party may have, taking into account relevant curriculum areas, embedding Maths, English, ICT and Equality and Diversity. Joseph will happily tailor his workshops to account for a wide range of age groups and ability.

From Joseph’s visit, Students will learn all that goes into the book publishing process and what it means to be an illustrator, learning the importance of books and illustration. They will take part in group activities where Joseph will demonstrate his character design techniques, as they watch characters they describe and create, come to life on the drawing board as Joseph draws live.
Students will learn how to tell stories through art and illustration, designing characters, learning drawing techniques. Students get the opportunity to create illustrations or comic books based on their own stories or the favourite books. These workshops can full or half day workshops.
Day workshops: Students can learn, cartooning techniques and practice illustrating from text.
Multiple day workshops: Allow Joseph the opportunity to help the students create short children’s stories of their very own, that they can then illustrate and share with other students.
For large group assemblies, the students will get the opportunity to see the entire illustrating process, and how and why illustrations are used in children’s books, such as Ann Bryant’s, Peter and the Timber Wolf. Then take part in live drawing demonstrations, and cartoon drawing and character design.
The only equipment Joseph requires is a flip chart and paper, then you name it, he can draw it.
Workshops can be tailored to suite your needs, they can be run over as many day as required.
Examples of Joseph’s Work
Examples of work Joseph has created with students
Below are examples of work Joseph created with students from ISL Qatar and a few from Orimston Bolingbroke Academy, near Manchester. These are the result of a group character design exercise. Students take it in turns to describe a feature for a new character which Joseph then sketches and inks onto the board for them to see their creation illustrated.
Testament to Joseph’s artistic skills and students imaginations!
