All About Dave Smith
In the last five years, Dave has visited over three hundred schools, talking to students about the ‘tools’ used in humour writing.
The aim of these sessions is to inspire pupils to write and help them believe in their writing, whilst having a laugh and turning writing from a chore into a pleasure.
There has been an enthusiastic response to his creative writing workshops from teachers and students alike. Not only are they interested, they are able to relate to someone who has made a living from being funny, as opposed to a more ‘heavyweight’ novelist.
Having been made redundant from a ‘normal’ job in 1991, Dave decided it was high time he did something he really enjoyed.
After making his white-knuckle debut at the Montreal Festival for his first taste of stand-up comedy, Dave soon became a regular at the Comedy Store, Jongleurs and major clubs all over the country. He supported Rich Hall on his UK tour and toured Ireland, and performed in Hong Kong and at the Groningen Comedy Festival in Holland, where he was officially declared ‘A Funny Guy.’
Dave made all sorts of appearances on TV – writing for and presenting a series of BBC’s EastEnders Revealed, Net.Comedy, The Little Picture Show and writing for BBC2’s Live Floor Show.
For a year and a half he was a weekly guest on BBC London Radio’s Lucy Longhurst Show and wrote and presented hour-long magazine shows on Viva Radio.
After appearing on Radio 4’s You and Yours and In Touch, Dave became a regular on Home Truths, where he wrote and narrated his own column in the company of the great John Peel.
Dave has also written for an eclectic mix of publications, including The Sunday Times, The Independent, GQ, Junior, Real, Home Buyer, Slimming and Mother and Baby. He is also a travel writer for The Boston Herald (USA).
His material is original, accessible and most importantly, funny.

Dave Smith’s School Visits
In his writing classes, he explains to the students how they can make a living from writing – newspapers, magazines, advertisements, stand-up comedy, radio, TV, websites – they all need copy.
The students get the opportunity to write something using the pointers he gives, which helps them overcome the ‘fear of the blank page’. They learn that writing is not beyond them – you don’t have to be a novelist to be a great writer!
At the end of the session, students have written work they can be proud of and which can contribute to their coursework. Some have gone on to showcase their work at evening performances, in front of family and friends.
Dave’s workshops are for all age groups of varying ability and he has visited schools of every kind, including huge comprehensives, smallish grammar schools, referral units and private schools. He has held creative writing courses at British schools in Paris, Rome, Madrid and Gütersloh, Germany. He has also delivered speeches to schools’ Literary Societies, Writers’ Circles and given careers talks to pupils about to leave school.
Dave is a member of the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), which required an enhanced disclosure check by the CRB. He also has a public liability insurance of £10 million.
