All About Damian Harvey

Damian lives in North Wales with his family and has written over 80 books for Primary School aged children – right now he’s busy writing more. He’s visited hundreds of schools and libraries across the UK, and abroad, where he gives lively interactive performance sessions for children from Nursery to Year 6 that are designed to get children enthused and excited about reading and writing for themselves.

He has written poems and rhyming stories, early reader books, chapter books, picture books and lots more with a range of publishers – including work on popular reading schemes such as Project X and Treetops (OUP), and Big Cats (Harper Collins).

Damian is a member of the Society of Authors, Literature Wales and the National Association of Writers in Education. He has an Enhanced DBS Certificate and full public liability Insurance.

Damian’s school visits:

I am very flexible when I visit schools and am happy to fit with your needs but as a general guide I offer two kinds of sessions;

Performance Session

These sessions consist of a lively mixture of storytelling and chat that is suitable for children from Nursery/Reception up to year Six – sessions are tailored to fit each year group.

These sessions work well with single classes or much larger school groups.

As well as sharing stories and poems I talk about different aspects of writing; from getting ideas to what it’s like being a writer. Audiences get the chance to see books and stories in progress and get an idea of the sort of things that go into making a children’s book – The drafting, editing, reworking and even the illustrations and layout.

These sessions are not rigidly planned so it allows each one to be unique to the group I’m working with and ensures the children get as much from the sessions as possible. Children (and adults) always have lots of questions to ask and I’m more than happy to answer any and all of them. I find that this helps to shape the way sessions progress, making each one different and interesting to the individual.

Number of children – these sessions work well with single classes as well as much larger groups – depending on your school and your needs.

Length of session – Approximately 1 Hour (less for very young classes).

Materials – A Table to Display Books.

Location – The School Hall, Library or Suitable Classroom.

Writing Workshops

Writing workshops are a lot of fun and I love working with a class so to create characters and build up a story together; I’m happy to do this with children from Reception to Year Six.

I’m also more than happy to focus on different aspects of story writing (including non-fiction) or to work on a story that fits in with a specific topic you’re working on.

Length of Session -1 Hour Minimum, and up to a full day if preferred.

Materials – Ideally I like to be able to use an interactive white board but a flip chart and pens can be used as an alternative.

Number of Children – Preferably Normal Class Size but I am flexible and can work with larger groups if required.

In these sessions I will generally work with a group to build up a story from scratch so that the children have complete ownership of it and really feel they have created something for themselves.

N.B. I am happy to do a combination of performance sessions and writing sessions throughout the course of the day.

A sample performance based timetable could look like this;

9.00/9:10 – 9.30: Whole School Assembly (or Nursery Session)

I introduce myself and get the day started with a story suitable for all ages

9.40 – 10.40: Session 1 Year 1 & 2 in the Hall (or classroom)

10.40 – 11.00: Break

11.00 – 11.45 /12.00: Session 2 Reception

(in a classroom especially if the hall needs to be clear for dinner)

12.00 – 13.00: Dinner

13.10 – 14.10: Session 3 – Years 3 and 4 in the Hall (or classroom)

14.15 – 15.15: Session 4 – Years 5 and 6 in the Hall (or classroom)

15.15: Booksale and Signing if desired

This is just a sample and I’m sure you have your own suggestions to fit your needs.

Right now I’m working on books for young readers and a big book for older readers that mixes real life with fiction when a young boy travels back in time and finds himself tangled in the world of one of the most notorious and successful pirates of all time – Bartholomew Robert – known today as Black Bart.

Reviews and Recommendations

“I just wanted to thank you for a fantastic day on Tuesday. You really made our library grand opening come alive. I have had such positive feedback from the children and the staff regarding your sessions with them. Being in classes over the last couple of days, I have seen children reading your books and hearing them talking about you and your exciting storytelling! I have had many demonstrations of actions and sound effects!” – John Shelton Primary – Coventry

“We have invited Damian Harvey along to Conwy Libraries several times and every time he has delivered very funny, interactive sessions – the children were totally transfixed and it was great to hear so much giggling coming from the audience and seeing the children so relaxed…it was one laugh after another. We look forward to welcoming him to Conwy again soon.” – Refna Griffiths-Jones (Conwy Libraries)
