Andy Winters

When I was at school, I was sometimes sent to stay with Crazy Uncle Peter. In the circus and showground world, he was known as Skin Dude; The World’s Most Tattooed Man. Today he would probably look quite normal, but back then he turned heads. Mum and Dad (who btw were the World’s Oldest Parents) would send me off for long periods with Uncle Peter. It was my education. I developed a thirst for magic and entertainment. Peter knew that I was by nature a magician – and he taught me all he knew. I travelled the wide-world (and the nether-world) performing as one half of an act called ‘The Incredible Blood Brothers’.

However, writing has always been my passion – diary writing; poetry; fiction, non-fiction, and a mixture of both. I wrote a short book once about some of my favourite acts. It’s called Terrifyingly Talented (Artistes, Fartistes and Funambulists). I also wrote a Football Rhyming Dictionary for The National Football Museum. I am a writer, a teacher, a trainer and a performer. My main focus these days is ‘Restorative Justice’, I created a schools and Youth Offending Team resource – it is called ‘Writing Wrongs’, and now it is on the Youth Justice Board’s Best Practice library. I have been commissioned by Her Majesty’s Home Office to produce a number of resources for anti-bullying and crime prevention.

Sometimes I collaborate with my good old mate Terry Caffrey, working as Poetricks. We have three interactive shows for schools.

A couple of years ago, Princess Anne invited me to Buckingham Palace to receive the Butler Trust Award for engaging young people in the Arts. [Bit of a mistake ?]

I have a black belt in the established Northern Culinary Arts. [chip butties, parched peas, blind scouse and vimto].

Andy’s School Visits

A typical school visit from Andy would be a whole school assembly with lots of magic, fun and motivation.  Then he can work with any age group in or class size throughout the rest of the day. Workshops include: Story writing (fiction/non-fiction) and poetry (scroll down and see his poetry resource). All workshops include fun and magic. If you would like issue based workshops such as anti-bullying, crime or Restorative Justice, Andy can also make these topics fun and engaging whilst at the same time tackling serious topics. Andy has worked in a variety of educational settings.  No school is too challenging.

Andy does INSET days for schools and specialises in methods to keep pupils stimulated and engaged.

Restorative Justice is Andy’s passion and his ‘Writing Wrongs’ resource for restorative justice is due to be released soon. Andy is presenting a crime workshop at this year’s Short Stay Schools Conference in York and he is presenting a workshop at the Restorative Justice Conference in Hull.

He has enhanced CRB disclosure and full public liability insurance.

“Can I just say what a pleasure it was having Andy present to our students today. He has a lovely way of engaging them, amusing them and interesting them at the same time. He’d make a great teacher! The students really got a lot out of the sessions. Some stayed behind to ask me more questions and also to ensure Andy would be coming back! Suffice to say I had to disappoint them! If you have any other initiatives available in the future, please bear us in mind as we’d love to work with you again.”
