“One of the UK’s most promising children’s writers.”
- Edinburgh Evening News
Born in 1962 and brought up in Kirriemuir, Scotland, Jan-Andrew Henderson studied journalism at Napier University before gaining an M.A. from Edinburgh University in 1987. He then got a job as a dishwasher.
On holiday in the USA, he threw away his return ticket and spent the next seven years in the states, taking vacations in Scotland instead. A dazzling series of career moves followed - including financial consultant, pen engraver, factory worker, hospital cleaner, graphic artist, cocktail barman, rubber stamp designer, script reader, call centre worker, pepper salesman, muralist, Easter bunny, balloon decorator, actor/writer/director at a children’s theatre in New York State, French waiter (complete with fake accent) in Manhattan and van driver in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (despite never having sat behind a wheel before).
Returning to Edinburgh in 1999, he founded the tastefully named City of the Dead Ghost Tours. This requires him to look moody and wear black a lot. He also began writing books, starting off with non-fiction, including The Town Below the Ground, The Emperors New Kilt, The Ghost That Haunted Itself and City of the Dead then switching to children’s fantasy (Secret City, Hunting Charlie Wilson).
He now writes dark and twisted teen thrillers under the name J A Henderson. The first two, Bunker 10 and Crash were shortlisted for a total of ten literary awards and Bunker 10 won Britain’s largest book prize –the Royal Mail Award.
The next, Colony, is out now. It’s about the flaws inherent in democracy, the nature of morality… and psychopaths.
